Simplicity 3835

Inspired by the talented ladies at Lindamade and Darling Petunia, I wanted to make my own version of Simplicity 3835 AKA the Built By Wendy top. It's also been dang hot around here, so the the time is right for light 'n' loose clothing.

I'll be honest, I never thought I would want to make a top like this. I thought it might be a little too sack-like for me. There are so many cute versions of it out there (check out this Flickr group), I thought I'd give it a try. I'm glad I did! It's a pretty quick project, comfy, and I've received a lot of compliments, too.

On a personal note, this summer blouse also beautifully hides the dreaded muffin top. I'm not saying I have one (ahem) but you know, if I did, this would be shirt to hide it. If I had a muffin top, which of course I don't. ;)

Why yes, I do have a ton of that fabric left, why do you ask?

Wardrobe Refashion!

I signed up for Wardrobe Refashion last Spring/Summer, taking the two month pledge. I've been following along in the last year and was inspired to try it again. Wish me luck!

The Pledge

I pledge that I shall abstain from the purchase of "new" manufactured items of clothing, for the period of 2 months. I pledge that I shall refashion, renovate, recycle preloved items for myself with my own hands in fabric, yarn or other medium for the term of my contract. I pledge that I will share the love and post a photo of my refashioned, renovoted, recycled, crafted or created item of clothing on the Wardrobe Refashion blog, so that others may share the joy that thy thriftiness brings!

Signed, Roxanne/Cheetah Velour

For my first project I posted this bag I made from an embroidered table runner I got at the flea market.

Is anyone else out there signed up on Wardrobe Refashion? I'd love to see what you're making these days!

DANA A-line wrap skirt

Not too long ago I found this cute cotton fabric at JoAnn's and for something like $2.75 a yard! Something about the bright colors on a black background combo has always appealed to me, and I felt like this fabric was waiting there just for me. For that price, I scooped up several yards!

Wrap skirt closeup

I wasn't sure what I wanted to make first. Inspired by this lovely skirt and the lovely PaperDollyGirl, I started with a wrap skirt. I picked out this FREE PATTERN (!) from Fitz a while ago but I had never tried it.

You print the pattern on your own printer, tape the pages together and cut. It looks like this:

Fitz 2211

I made a few small changes. I did the long tie belt, but it didn't really flatter me since I like to wear my shirt over my skirt and the tie added some extra bulk underneath my shirt. I prefer a flat & more fitted waistband, so I chopped off the tie belt and made a waistband that closed with buttons instead. I also added bias tape around the edges. I love me some bias tape!

Dana skirt

One thing I really like about this skirt is the kangaroo pocket in front. Very handy for stashing your keys or lip balm.

The kids these days and their gorilla snot!

Have you seen Moco de Gorila in your local store? If you are in need of some hair gel, make sure you ask for it by name!

Accept no substitutes! Only genuine gorilla snot will do when you need that faux hawk to stand up straight.

Tag, I'm it!

I’ve been tagged by the super-swell Darling Petunia.  I'm sorry I didn't get around to it sooner, but I've been under the weather. I'm back in action, so thanks for tagging me, darlin’. I’ll do my best.

Here are the rules: I answer 6 questions about myself. At the end of the post, I tag 6 people and post their names. I then go to their blogs and leave them a comment, letting them know they’ve been tagged and asking them to read my blog. Finally, I let the person who tagged me know when I’ve posted my answers.

What was I doing ten years ago?

I was working as an associate teacher/substitute at a center for education & behavioral development AKA a school for special education. I was living in beautiful Oakland, CA.

Five things on my to-do list for today?

It’s already evening, so I will say:

Drink a beer

Go in the garage and work on my bird feeder. Yes, I am building a bird feeder. You wanna make something of it?

Make a pizza

Watch some cartoons. Right now I am watching  B&W Fleischer cartoons esp. old skool Popeye!

Maybe have another beer while I watch those cartoons.

Snacks I like?

NACHOS. Anytime, anywhere.

Notice how I didn’t say carrot sticks?

Things I would do if I were a billionaire?

Take a nap. Quit my job and volunteer more. Pay my bills. Pay the bills of those closest to me. Donate  generously. Take another nap. Super nachos for everybody. Build a school. I would also pimp my ride.

Places I have lived?

SF Bay Area, California

Reno, Nevada

Switzerland for three whole months when I was a teenage foreign exchange student. Wow. I am so exotic.

Six people I want to know more about?

1) Life with monkey http://lifewithmonkey.wordpress.com/

2) A tad too much tan for taupe http://tadtoomuchtanfortaupe.blogspot.com/

3) Lindamade http://lindamade.wordpress.com/

4) Adventures in leisure http://www.glamarama.net/blog/

5) Crafty dad http://www.craftydad.typepad.com/

6) YOU!

Frumpalicious!

I found this frumpalicious elastic waist skirt at the thrift store for a couple of bucks. I have a sneaking suspicion that it was somebody's home ec project due to the variety of threads and stitches used. Frumpalicious! It was kind of weird.

The fabric was too cute to resist and I knew it wanted to be something else- but what?

The man of the house suggested a dress. Now why didn't I think of that?!?

I based it on McCall's 5425. Mostly I just winged it. You can pretty much tell how this dress is made by looking at the picture on the envelope. Yes, it was just that easy! McCall's 5425

After:

Muu muu stylee

Now don't go thinking I'm all modest because my head is cut off in this picture. I was using the camera timer and gosh darn it, I'm just not that good at taking my own picture.

Now I personally like the potato sack dress/muu muu style because it's oh-so-comfy and hides those figure flaws we all know and love, but there is also the optional sash if you like.

Sash

This dress was really easy to make and even easier to wear. This could be one of my summer staples if I make it in a few different colors. I'm laid back like that.

D'oh! A deer! A female deer!

It's coming up on the end of May and there is all sorts of stuff going on in the yard!

This little friend came to visit just this morning.

Our state birds dropped by just last week for an informal visit. I can't wait 'til they bring the kids.

The First Lady. What poise!

Img_1125

I hope this isn't cheating, but this was actually growing in a neighbor's front yard. The color was so pretty I had to include it here. Mother Nature gets it right every time.

Hope you are enjoying nice weather wherever you are!

Another summer shirt

I started out with another man shirt I picked up last year from the thrift store.

Shirt

Nope, that's not a stain on the front. It's an iron-on! Nothing is easier than an iron-on.

Close_up

I didn't get much use out of it as a long-sleeve but wasn't sure I wanted to toss it into the donation pile. Then I saw this shirt at Target and thought, "I can do that!"

Using another short sleeve shirt as a pattern, I cut the sleeves off at an angle. I made a casing all the way around each sleeve and ran some 1/2 " elastic through it. Not too snug so I could move my arms.

Sleeve

That's all there is to it! I also added a few narrow darts to the back for shape.

My_new_shirt

This was a super quick project and really easy. Now I have another shirt made from stuff I already had around the house. Nice!

You learn nothing by sitting in the car

Img_0672

I just got back from Death Valley and here are some pictures of a side trip to the semi-ghost town of Ballarat and the infamous Barker Ranch. Like the sign says, you learn nothing by sitting in the car!

So much has been written about Manson and his family, and there are so many rumors it's hard to know what's true and what's not. So instead of telling you what I think I know, I'll just show you what I saw.

Img_0698

Ballarat has a few disintegrating buildings, a small cemetery and a store that was fortunately open during my visit. There is an old Dodge truck sitting out front and the old man who runs the place told me, "That's Manson's truck". I read somewhere that it was abandoned by Tex Watson.

Img_0699

Stars painted in the cab. Yup, that's the right truck!

From Ballarat, follow the dirt road to Goler Wash AKA Goler Canyon.

Img_0709

Once you enter the canyon, it's about 4 or so miles more of even bumpier road with some tight squeezes in the beginning and some sharp rocks. High clearance 4x4's (like a Jeep) are recommended, but we got there in a Subaru Outback All Wheel Drive just fine. Took a long time, though. It was a pretty drive with lots of things to see- old mines, wild flowers, chuckwallas, and a lot of rocks.

Barker Ranch isn't especially easy to find (it was a hideout after all) but the other travelers out there were extremely helpful. Barker Ranch is there if you know where to look. Note the chairs on the hill. We'll be getting back to those later.

Img_0974

The door is open. Come inside and sit a spell.

Img_0976

You're welcome to spend the night if you like.

Bedroom

A lot of people come and visit this place. Some leave things for other visitors. Things like candles, magazines, cans of food, or in this case "50 First Dates" starring Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler! Nothing like a light hearted Adam Sandler DVD to suck the evil right out of a place. I don't know who left this in a place like this, but I appreciate their twisted sense of humor. By the way, there's no electricity so it's not like you could watch it anyway.

Img_0977

BEST GRAFFITI EVER. There were irreverent touches everywhere.

Img_0985

This poster of a cuddly kitten was in another building. I don't know who put this up, but I doubt it's been there since 1969. Good to know I am not the only one with a totally inappropriate sense of humor.

Img_0986

There are two chairs on a little hill behind the house. I read somewhere (probably on the internet) that the family used these as a lookout.

Img_0991

I'll bet just about everyone who goes there sits in the chairs. Here's the view from up there. Gives you an idea of the layout.

Img_0994

Heading out. There are irrigation lines running and watering some of the plants and trees. It's a refreshing little oasis if you can forget about the history.

Img_0998

Before going, I did my best to do a little online research. Some accounts say that this place is haunted or has a creepy vibe. Some accounts say there's no one there but the rats, lizards and snakes. I'm going to have to go with that last one. Maybe it's from being comfortable exploring (most) rural abandoned places, or maybe I just don't have enough mental power to pick up 'impessions' but it was just a house. Kind of a relief.

If you are thinking about going, there is plenty of information out there on how to get there and what to look for. Bring the appropriate vehicle and bring your lunch. Bring plenty of water. Bring a friend to help guide your vehicle over the rough spots, bring plenty of supplies in case you get stuck (knock on wood) and bring your directions. You will pass some sign posts along the way, but someone has cleverly removed some of the signs. We got a little bit lost for a while, but we saw a lot of other people out there who were more than happy to share information.

Strong enough for a man, but made for a woman

Wait- I really haven't checked in for a whole month? Oops, my bad. I'll have to do something about that. How about an easy sewing project?

I started out with this man shirt-

Man_shirt

and using Simplicity 4589, I turned it into a summer top for me!

Lady_shirt

The sleeves are a little bit of solid cotton from the fabric store, and I actually sewed the front shut. It's pullover style. I may change the buttons to something cute later, but I haven't decided yet.

E-Z!
